Italian mayor claims Spaghetti Bolognese isn’t real

Western-style spaghetti bolognese.

Bologna is a city in Italy famed for being the home and birthplace of spaghetti Bolognese. However, the city’s mayor Virginio Merola has claimed that the dish is ‘fake news’.

He has launched an awareness campaign to teach people the truth.

“Spaghetti Bolognese doesn’t actually exist, yet it’s famous the world over,” Merola said the Italian news channel RAI.

“What we’d prefer the world to know is that Bologna invented tagliatelle, tortellini and lasagne.”

He’s correct to some extent. The meat-based Ragu alla Bolognese sauce was created in Bologna at some point in the late 18th century but is not used with spaghetti in Italy. The sauce is traditionally paired with pasta like lasagne and fettuccine and with cheeses like parmesan and mozzarella.
