Netflix bumps up its subscription cost

To all of you out there who are the sole providers of Netflix across the family, we salute you.

In an email sent out to Kiwi Netflix subscribers this week, Netflix announced it will be raising its New Zealand monthly subscription cost from $14.99 to $16.99.

The subscription increase will begin next month and has taken Netflix from one of the more affordable streaming services to the most expensive. The launch of Netflix in 2015 offered a package price of only $9.99 per month and as of December would have increased by a staggering 70 percent.

Netflix’s email to its loyal subscribers explained the decision of a fee increase.

“Why?

“Because we’re hard at work improving Netflix so that you can have even more great TV shows and movies to enjoy.”

Netflix competitors include Spark’s Lightbox platform, offering subscribers online movie rentals for $12.99 per month, and Sky’s Neon option, which offers blockbuster movies for $13.95 per month following a dramatic price cut in September.
