Samoa bans ‘Rocketman’

Samoa has banned the Elton John biopic Rocketman because of its depictions of gay sex.

In Samoan law, sodomy is illegal and punishable by up to seven years in prison. Apollo Cinemas in Samoa’s capital Apia wrote on its Facebook page: “Unfortunately due to censoring issues we have had to cancel ‘Rocketman'”.

The decision comes a few weeks after a Russian distributor cut sex scenes from the film, drawing criticism from Sir Elton.

“That the local distributor has edited out certain scenes, denying the audience the opportunity to see the film as it was intended is a sad reflection of the divided world we still live in,” Sir Elton said in a statement, “and how it can still be so cruelly unaccepting of the love between two people.”
