A sequel to the renowned horror film The Shining has hit cinemas this week and moviegoers might want to prepare themselves.
Doctor Sleep focuses on Dan Torrence, the traumatised child character from the first film who now struggles with alcoholism. Dan remains traumatised from the disturbing events that occurred at the Overlook Hotel when he was a child and dreams of a peaceful existence. The dream is soon shattered when he meets Abra, a teen who shares his extraordinary gift of the “shine.” Together they form an alliance to battle the True Knot, a cult which tries to feed off the shine of innocents to become immortal.
Dan Torrence is played by Ewan McGregor who explained the film should not be compared to the original.
“If people are expecting to see The Shining again, they’re not. This is a very different beast, this is very much a story about recovery and redemption or hopefulness,” McGregor explained.
“Dan is at the depth of his alcoholism, he’s rock bottom, and it’s because he can live with what’s inside him and it’s all very metaphorical, I’m sure. But, you know, in his case, there are real demons. They’re not his inner demons.”
After almost 40 years since The Shining hit the screen, Doctor Sleep is here to continue the haunting story.
