Beauty for Beginners with Emma Lewisham

We had the opportunity to catch up with Emma Lewisham to find out how beauty and skincare novices can dip their toes into the world of beauty.

Emma Lewisham was founded with a single purpose: to make a meaningful difference in the beauty industry. For them, achieving a meaningful difference means setting a new standard in skincare – proving that luxurious, high-performing skincare doesn’t have to come at a trade-off to women’s health or the planet.

So, you’re completely new to the ‘skin-journey’ and have never touched a face serum in your life. Lewisham is here to save the day.

Starting your skincare journey

Firstly, Lewisham recommends to start with an antioxidant-rich, 100 percent natural moisturiser that contains an SPF 30 at a minimum and wearing it every day. 80 percent of visible facial ageing is from UV ray exposure – they contribute to wrinkles, hyperpigmentation and the loss of elasticity.

One thing to note is – UV rays are still there, even if its cloudy or rainy. So, the emphasis on wearing SPF every day is incredibly important!

Emma recommends…

Skin Shield Daily by Emma Lewisham. This combines hyaluronic acid (it holds 1000x its weight in water), vitamin C and E, a pollution blocker and SPF30 broad-spectrum coverage.

The Emma Lewisham difference

How are Emma Lewisham products different to those you can find at the supermarket?

Emma Lewisham approaches natural skincare differently, instead of using 2-3 hero ingredients, they use up to 30 high performing natural ingredients at the highest levels of concentrations. There are no fillers, so every inch of a product is working to ensure it is delivering more results than ever before.

The brand also invests in highly innovative, high-tech ingredients such as stem cells and neuropeptide technology from plants.

“Where most mega-brands look to pull back manufacturing costs, we focus on quality and efficacy first, and cost last,” explained Lewisham.

As Emma Lewisham products are 100 percent natural and clean – it means they have eliminated 2,700 ingredients that are deemed questionable by leading authority, the Environmental Working Group (EWG). However, the results are outstanding.

“We haven’t compromised results – and in fact, outperform or rival traditional luxury and cosmeceutical brands. To us, achieving a product that is 100 percent clean and highly efficacious is the absolute pinnacle in skincare and rarely have both been achieved at the same time.”

Emma Lewisham is committed to sustainability – they are leaders in that regard. They’ve created the world’s first-ever sunscreen tubes from 100 percent post-consumer recycled plastic. They’ve also launched the Emma Lewisham Beauty Circle Free Recycling Programme as well as a Refill Programme for all brands of facial skincare products – New Zealand’s first beauty initiative of this kind.

Thinking about retinol?

All the beauty bloggers are talking about Retinol – but it all seems a bit scary, definitely for beginners.

So, what is Retinol exactly?

Retinol is a type of retinoid, derived from vitamin A. It works by increasing both collagen production and the rate of skin cell turnover, both of these decrease naturally in our bodies in our thirties. It also helps unclog pores, exfoliate and smooth skin, reduce fine lines and wrinkles.

However, retinol does come with side effects like irritation and redness. This is why it is generally recommended to use retinol once or twice a week, to begin with to see if your skin reacts, and work your way up to three times a week. It is usually also incorporated into a nighttime skincare routine, as it does make your skin a bit more sensitive to sunlight.

“The good news is that there are some amazing advancements in natural science which have overcome this. The likes of green-tech ingredient Bakuchiol has scientifically proven to be as powerful as retinol, but remarkably doesn’t come with the compromise and known side-effects of retinol such as redness, dryness and irritation.

Emma Lewisham uses Bakuchiol in their Supernatural Tripe Vitamin A+ Face Oil.

Emma’s daily skincare routine

If you’re a bit nosy like me, I’m always interested in other people’s skincare routines. Emma shares with us her daily routine – perhaps this could give you some inspo!

Emma begins with cleansing her face with the Illuminating Oil Cleanser.

“I believe cleansing is the unsung hero of a skincare routine. It draws out toxins and pollutants from your skin and enables the following skincare products to penetrate the epidermis effectively.”

During the day, Emma uses her Skin Reset Serum and the Skin Shield Daily Face moisturiser with SPF 30 on top. Then, her makeup goes on top of all of this.

At night, she uses the Illuminating Oil and the Illuminating Exfoliant a couple of times each week. She also sues the Supernatural Tripe Vitamin A+ Face Oil and then the Skin Reset serum, followed by the Supernatural 72-hour Hydration Creme.

Normal skin types, listen up!

Great news, you should be able to use all Emma Lewisham products without any complications on a daily basis (except the exfoliant, which should be used two to three times a week).

The general rule for skincare is to layer from the ‘thinnest’, most viscous product, to the thickest and most textured product.

Got sensitive skin?

Navigating the skincare world with sensitive skin can be tough. Avoid ingredients which are known to irritate the skin. This applies to natural skincare brands too.

For instance, many natural brands use synthetic preservative, Phenoxyethanol, in order to be able to make a paraben-free’ claim. However, Phenoxyethanol is linked to adverse health effects and can be irritating for the skin.

“I’d recommend you check ingredients you’re not sure about against the EWG’s Skin Deep Database. This ranks ingredients by how irritating, harmful and hazardous they are to human health. It is very well backed by science and research articles.”

Mixing skincare brands and trying new products

There is no research to show that skin suffers from using products from different brands. So mixing brands as well as trying new products is totally fine!

“I’d recommend trying new skincare by itself, to see how your skin like that particular product, and to help you see the results you’re getting from it.”

However, if you are ever unsure about a product – it pays to check the ingredients with your doctor.

Skincare results vary depending on the product you are trying and your skin. Everyone’s skin is different so the time it can take to see results will vary.

For example, Emma Lewisham’s Skin Reset serum was developed for evening skin tone. It is proven to repair and prevent hyperpigmentation and was specifically developed for all forms of hyperpigmentation including sun damage, uneven skin tone and dark spots, hormonal pigmentation, spots and acne scarring.

“Using this product, very stubborn pigmentation which has built up over years can take several months to shift, but other customers who perhaps have less pigmentation will sometimes see results in a week.”

Emma Lewisham’s new Illuminating Range

The recently launched Illuminating Range consists of an oil cleanser and an exfoliant.

The Illuminating Oil Cleanser contains 23 high performing actives. Its formula contains a signature blend of four prized flower enzymes: Neroli Absolute, Rose Absolute, Jasmine Absolute, and Bulgarian Lavender.

The flowers gently exfoliate away dead skin cells for illuminating skin. Neroli, in particular, is an advanced natural enzyme that has unparalleled benefits by detoxifying the skin and drawing out makeup, impurities and environmental pollutants from deep in the skin.

Upon contact with water, it transforms into a milky emulsion to ensure a residue-free finish.

The Illuminating Exfoliant is a natural 100 percent natural exfoliating hybrid (chemical and physical) treatment. The Exfoliant is created with 21 high performing natural ingredients that deeply detoxify and hydrate the skin. It contains natural lactic acid (AHA), derived from maize. Lactic acid penetrates
the glue that cements dead skin cells together, revealing a smoother, brighter surface.

Willow bark (BHA) is also incorporated to penetrate and break down the excess sebum build-up in clogged pores to help prevent breakouts. We also use jojoba beads which are gentle by nature, naturally-occurring, micro-tear proof and environmentally friendly – staying true to our sustainability ethos.

The Exfoliant also includes hydration powerhouse Pentavitin, which is an ingredient that outperforms hyaluronic acid. It replenishes the skin’s moisture for a prolonged period and holds 1000 times its water weight.

“I’ve wanted to create a truly efficacious, but 100% natural cleansing range that was true to our brand’s core ethos for many years. I believe cleansing is often a second thought, people don’t place enough importance around properly cleansing and exfoliating.”

The Illuminating range is safe for all women to use, at every stage of their life. It is also refillable and recyclable through our Emma Lewisham Beauty Circle.
