Life in plastic really is fantastic for director Greta Gerwig. After finding international acclaim with her two solo directorial ventures, Lady Bird (2017) and Little Women (2019), both of which earned nominations for the Academy Award for Best Picture, she has turned her attention to one of the most iconic toys of the 20th Century.
In April, Warner Bros unveiled the first image of Margot Robbie as Barbie, and now the much-anticipated preview of Barbie’s beau has been released.
In the photo, Ryan Gosling, all abs and beach blonde hair, models Ken’s own line of underwear, which appear to be a riff on Calvin Klein’s famous briefs.
Considering how brilliant both Lady Bird and Gerwig’s version of Little Woman were, we can’t wait to see her spin on everyone’s favourite doll.
Back in 2019, Robbie told Variety magazine that Gerwig’s take on Barbie won’t be what everyone will be expecting.
“I think it’s a great opportunity to put some positivity out in the world and a chance to be aspirational for younger kids.”
Although a New Zealand release date hasn’t yet be announced, Barbie is due in U.S cinemas on July 21, 2023.
