A completely new world of Swedish style is finally arriving in New Zealand, and the doors are ready to open.
New Zealand is finally getting its very first IKEA, and if you have ever wondered what the global buzz is all about, the Sylvia Park store is about to show you. Opening on 4 December at 11am with regular hours of 9am to 9pm after that, this gigantic 34,000 square metre destination has been built entirely with Kiwi shoppers in mind. To put things into perspective, it is larger than eight of the ten Australian big blue box stores. That alone says plenty.
Getting there has been made incredibly easy. Together with Kiwi Property, IKEA has widened roads, added traffic signals and improved turning lanes around Sylvia Park. A brand new covered walkway bridge along Te Ahoterangi Rise now connects the shopping centre to the store. You can walk over comfortably from the train or bus without getting caught in the Auckland weather. If you are driving, there are 544 undercover car parks directly beneath the store, 28 motorbike bays, dedicated accessibility and family spaces and EV chargers. If you prefer biking, you will find 38 bicycle parks waiting. Click and Collect is also available from 6am to 11pm, which is ideal for early birds and late-night organisers.

Inside, shoppers will find about 7500 products created under IKEA’s well-known Democratic Design principles, which combine quality, function, sustainability and beautiful shape, starting from a low price point. The iconic Swedish Restaurant is here too, with seating for 426 diners. Expect the classics like meatballs, salmon and plant-based favourites as well as New Zealand exclusive dishes including lingonberry pavlova, fish and chips and a warming lamb pie. The famous hot dogs are also expected to fly out the door with up to 3500 sold each week.
Families can visit Småland, which is IKEA’s free supervised play area for children aged 3 to 8. Kids enjoy a 30-minute session while parents browse, and IKEA Family members receive an extra 30 minutes Monday to Friday. More than 75,000 New Zealanders have already joined IKEA Family, the free loyalty programme offering member-only prices, special surprises, events, early news, and reduced delivery fees. Delivery starts from 7 dollars nationwide for parcels up to 8kg, with larger items delivered via truck or Pick up Points across the country. Signing up is instant online or in-store.
The store itself is also a major sustainability achievement. It has already received a 5 Green Star Design rating and operates on renewable energy. More than 1700 solar panels on the roof generate about half of its power. The rest is purchased from local renewable sources such as hydro. The building uses advanced insulation, which creates a giant 34,000 square metre chilly bin effect that helps maintain internal temperatures overnight. Rainwater harvesting tanks hold 50,000 litres, which is used for flushing and garden irrigation. All lighting is LED and individually programmable, which reduces energy use even further.
There are also 25 EV chargers for customers, as well as charging available for delivery trucks and vans. From opening day, shoppers can sell back eligible pre-loved IKEA furniture and receive an IKEA refund card to spend in-store. These items will be given a second life in the As Is area.

IKEA’s launch also includes a commitment to local communities. With one in seven New Zealand children living in violent homes, the business has partnered with Barnardos Aotearoa to support families in unsafe situations. Customers will be able to add donations to their purchase, and IKEA will contribute furnishings, financial support and design expertise to help create safer spaces for those who need extra care.
Whether you are visiting for flatpack treasure hunting, Swedish treats, home inspiration or simply for the thrill of exploring room after room of beautifully styled spaces, Sylvia Park is bringing the full global IKEA experience to Aotearoa. More than 540 workers are ready to welcome shoppers, and IKEA hopes the store becomes a second home where families gather, children play, and friends share a meal.
For the best experience on opening day, download the free IKEA app. It helps you navigate the store, build shopping lists, locate products and even skip checkout queues with the Scan and Go feature. Receipts and your IKEA Family card live in the app, keeping everything tidy and stress-free.
