Kiwis Celebrate Pets in the Most Unexpected Ways

Kiwis Celebrate Pets in the Most Unexpected Ways - Petdirect

Ahead of International Pet Day on the 11th of April, Petdirect has shared some truly rogue customer care enquiries – and yes, these are all real.

Over the past year, the Petdirect customer care team has received some wild enquiries, including:

  • A woman who asked if Petdirect sold shock collars safe for use on her husband
  • A mum wondering if flea treatment could double as lice shampoo for her kids
  • A woman asking if a dog muzzle would fit her partner – even sending the link to check sizing
  • Multiple people trying to order Viagra, antidepressants, and painkillers through the Petdirect pharmacy, to buy for themselves

While these calls gave the team a good laugh, they are a testament to the deep (and sometimes misplaced) trust Kiwis place in Petdirect.

That said, New Zealand’s pet obsession is very real, and Petdirect’s 2024 Pet Census proves just how seriously Kiwis take their fur babies.

Surveying over 6,000 pet owners and more than 9,000 pets, the census revealed:

  • 66 percent of Kiwi pet parents celebrate their pet’s birthday
  • 36 percent take them on holiday
  • 77 percent let them sleep in their beds
  • And yes, 23 percent admit to dressing them up for the occasion

With over 9,000 pets surveyed, the census also found that 41 percent of pet owners happily let their animals lick their face – further providing that pets are very much family.
