Released right before the world went into lockdown, Tom Papa’s new Netflix comedy special sends the message we all need to hear right now: You’re Doing Great.

Papa keeps the focus of his observational humour on his audience, whom he wants to reassure in these divisive and troubling times – and he didn’t mean pandemic times, just times in general, but the advise is definitely well-received right now.
“Calm down. You’re doing great!” he says. “Life isn’t perfect. It never was, and it never will be. We’ve all got stuff to deal with. You’re doing great.”
Papa’s observational humour feels like a combination of contemporaries like Jim Gaffigan and Brian Regan. His dress sense and particular punctuation of punchlines show influences of Seinfeld (with whom Papa used to tour before breaking out as his own headline act). This means the special is relatively family-friendly, another aspect that makes Papa stand out from the Netflix comedy crowd.
The special was filmed in Papa’s home state of New Jersey and other than his comforting advise the comedian takes on body image issues, social media, pets, Staten Island, the “old days” and more.
