REVIEW | Dreame X50 Ultra

Want a spotless clean with above-average cleverness?

I’ve tested my fair share of robot vacuums, but the Dreame X50 Ultra genuinely feels like a step up. I’ve had it running on a daily schedule, vacuuming twice and mopping once across hardwood floors, vinyl, carpet and a large area rug. It hasn’t missed a beat.

The difference was immediately visible on my hardwood floors. They looked shinier than they ever did with my previous robot vacuum. Not just dust-free, but properly polished. And despite having a long-haired ragdoll cat and a wool-coated poodle, you wouldn’t know it from the floors. No fur, no fluff, no trace of pet life left behind.

One of the biggest wins is how it handles its mop pads. Unlike other models I’ve reviewed, the X50 Ultra removes its mop pads at the dock before vacuuming. So there’s no chance of wet pads dragging over your carpet. That’s a subtle feature that makes a big difference. It also comes with a floor cleaning solution, two dust bags, and an extendable cleaning brush, all right in the box. Dreame clearly understands that the details matter.

What really sets the X50 Ultra apart is its ProLeap retractable leg system. It can effortlessly climb thresholds up to six centimetres, making it one of the only robots I’ve used that can genuinely move between rooms without help. The legs lift independently or in sync depending on the surface, and include shock absorption for smoother, quieter transitions. Dreame has rated the system for 30,000 lift cycles, so it’s built to last. Combined with the retractable lidar sensor that lets it dip under low furniture, it’s not just smart. It’s physically agile.

Obstacle avoidance is smart and consistent. It has avoided cords, fabric and even the cat with ease, and it takes photos of anything in its way, which show up in the app. It’s mildly entertaining and surprisingly useful. I’m not concerned about the camera. The angle is so low that it barely comes up to my knees. Unless you’re doing yoga in front of it, it’s just snapping feet pics. The only piece of furniture it struggled with was the legs of my Eames lounge chair. It got caught once and has never repeated the mistake.

The app works well, but could use a visual refresh. The colour scheme isn’t great, but I like how clearly it displays maps and obstacle photos. My main gripe is with the base station. The water tanks aren’t labelled, so it’s unclear which one is clean and which is dirty, and there’s no max fill line either. But the most disappointing thing is that the tray at the bottom of the station can’t be fully removed. You have to get down on the ground to clean it, and it’s hard to see what you’re doing from that angle.

Still, the Dreame X50 Ultra performs where it counts. It is powerful, polished and impressively clever. It makes daily cleaning feel effortless. For homes with pets, mixed flooring and high standards, this is a robot vacuum that genuinely delivers.
