REVIEW | Red One

Red One is a festive rollercoaster that blends Christmas magic with Hollywood action. This unique holiday film, directed by Jake Kasdan, features Dwayne Johnson as Callum Drift, Santa Claus’s Head of Security, and Chris Evans as Jack O’Malley, a cheeky hacker with a heart of gold. Together, they embark on a globe-trotting adventure to save Christmas when Santa’s life is threatened.

The film’s most vital asset is its imaginative world-building. The North Pole isn’t just Santa’s workshop—it’s a high-tech hub where ancient magic meets cutting-edge technology. This detailed holiday universe is populated by mythical creatures and folklore-inspired characters, creating an intriguing backdrop that feels familiar and fresh. It’s the world that invites future spin-offs, perhaps exploring other holidays with the same flair.

Performances elevate the experience. Dwayne Johnson brings his signature charisma, balancing the muscle-bound action hero with surprising emotional depth. His portrayal of Callum Drift is both heartfelt and entertaining, offering moments of vulnerability that make him relatable. Meanwhile, Chris Evans steals scenes as the sarcastic Jack, seamlessly blending wit and action-star energy. J.K. Simmons as Santa Claus is a standout, managing to be both inspiring and hilariously self-aware, all while rocking a gym-buffed physique that’s funny and impressive.

Visually, Red One is a treat. The sets are vibrant and detailed, from the bustling North Pole headquarters to action-packed locations around the globe. Practical effects are seamlessly blended with CGI, giving the film a polished and immersive feel. However, its pacing is uneven, with a runtime exceeding two hours. Some scenes could have been tightened to maintain momentum, as the story occasionally meanders into subplots that dilute its emotional core.

The tonal shifts between heartfelt holiday moments and blockbuster action may not work for everyone. While the film attempts to balance these elements, it sometimes feels caught between being a traditional Christmas movie and a Marvel-style spectacle. Despite this, the charm of its leads and the sheer creativity of its world keep it enjoyable.

Red One offers an entertaining, family-friendly adventure with plenty of festive cheer and action-packed thrills. While not a perfect Christmas classic, it’s worth watching for its unique take on the holiday genre.
