After using the WiZ Portrait Desk Lamp for a few weeks, I can confidently say it’s a well-designed, thoughtful addition to any workspace. Whether you’re working late into the evening or jumping on a video call, this smart desk lamp delivers impressive lighting and sleek functionality.
The standout feature for me is undoubtedly the actual lighting. I mostly use the lamp in its horizontal mode as a task light, and it provides crisp, even illumination that’s gentle on the eyes. Perfect for focused work or reading. I’ve also tested it for a few video calls, and it gives off a flattering, natural glow that helps me look clear and well-lit on screen, even in a dim room.

What’s clever about this lamp is its dual-zone lighting. Depending on how you angle it, you can use the top ring for ambient backlighting or flip it upright for a soft front-facing video light. It’s surprisingly versatile for such a compact lamp.
Tilting the lamp head is firm but smooth. Once you angle it, it stays put. It’s exactly what you’d hope for in a desk lamp: sturdy, flexible, and clean.

Like many smart home products, the app setup didn’t go perfectly on the first try. The light wasn’t pulsing as expected, and I struggled to get it into pairing mode. I gave up after a few minutes at first, but later circled back and connected it to the WiZ app, and since then, it’s worked smoothly.
Once paired, you can adjust brightness, warmth, and light modes right from your phone, or even set up schedules or routines.
I’m not a huge fan of the ON and OFF buttons; it seems like we could have just had one button to do both jobs. It’s not a big deal, but it was one thing I didn’t like about the design.
Overall, I really like this lamp. It’s beautifully designed, provides excellent lighting, and once connected, offers all the smart features you’d expect from a modern lighting system. The setup could be smoother, but it doesn’t take away from the fact that it’s a high-performing, very affordable (NZ$199), good-looking lamp that makes workspaces feel more functional and comfortable.
