Angelina Jolie has turned her focus towards developing the craft of singing opera.
Well, sort of. The Hollywood actress, 47, is starring in “Maria,” a biopic about Amerian-born Greek soprano, Maria Callas.
The film follows Callas during her last days in the 1970s and is set in Paris. The film will be directed by acclaimed filmmaker, Pablo Larrain, who is known for his work on biopic feature films “Jackie,” which followed the life of Jackie Kennedy as first lady, and “Spencer” which starred Kristen Stewart in the role of Princess Diana.
The film was also written by Steven Knight, who is the creator of the popular television series, “Peaky Blinders.”
Maria Callas is widely regarded as one of history’s finest sopranos, with many critics praising her bel canto technique, wide-ranging voice, and dramatic interpretations. Callas was also known for her relationship with Aristotle Onassis. Her musical and dramatic skill has led to her being known as “La Divina,” which translates to “The Devine One.”
Academy Award winner, Jolie, said in an interview that the role carries a lot of importance.
“I take very seriously the responsibility to Maria’s life and legacy. I will give all I can to meet the challenge,” said Jolie, who is a big fan of the director as well.
“Pablo Larrain is a director I have long admired. To be allowed the chance to tell more of Maria’s story with him, and with a script by Steven Knight is a dream.”
Larrain said that making this film was something that included many of his interests.
“Having the chance to combine my two most deep and personal passions, cinema and opera, has been a long-awaited dream. To do this with Angelina, a supremely brave and curious artist, is a fascinating opportunity. A true gift.”
“Maria” is currently scheduled to be featured at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
