Episode Seventeen: Cheater’s Edition

After the chaos that was the dinner party, this week’s commitment ceremony certainly delivered. Luckily, producers did not beat around the bush and invited Janelle and Adam to the couch first.

While Janelle sat in tears, the experts asked how she felt about Adam’s behaviour, especially as he continued on his tirade of blame and defensiveness as he sat on the couch.

“The lack of accountability or remorse [for cheating] was shocking,” said Janelle.

Her words were met with an agreement as the other couples bickered about the difference between Adam’s and Jesse’s behaviour following their indiscretion. Alyssa, in particular, spared no venom when Claire commented that the other bride had not even looked at her since the revelation of the cheating scandal.

“I can’t look at you after what you’ve done,” spat Alyssa.

The bride’s emotional reactions raised more than a few eyebrows at the commitment ceremony and those watching from home.

Expert John Aiken called Adam out for his inability to take responsibility, stating that the groom said the words ‘I’m sorry’ but had no idea what they meant. Aiken noted that an apology could not be followed with excuses or blame, or else it wasn’t an apology at all.

Adam nodded, although whether he listened is debatable, as he left the couch as quickly as possible after writing ‘leave’. He was not followed during his exit, while Janelle was comforted by all after she wrote ‘leave’ as well, meaning yet another couple had left the experiment.

When it came time for Alyssa and Duncan to sit in front of the experts, the bride was asked about her feelings as she cried more about the cheating scandal than Jesse or Janelle combined (you know, the pair who were actually cheated on).

Alyssa’s strong feelings had her attacking her partner for exchanging a few texts with Adam, the cheating groom, to which Duncan stated that his interactions with the groom centred around him advising Adam to take accountability.

The bride then demanded to know what Duncan had said to Adam face-to-face.

“Adam asked if Alyssa was going to come after him [at the dinner party], and I said yes, and that he deserved it,” revealed Duncan.

Alyssa appeared to light up at hearing this, despite having accused her husband of condoning Adam’s behaviour by associating with him. It could be deduced that her reactions are more a projection of her guilty conscience, having been the ‘other woman’ to a married man for six months, a piece of information only Duncan is privy to.

When Claire and Jesse entered the couch, Alyssa berated Claire again about taking accountability. Claire has, however, apologised on multiple occasions and made a point not to try an excuse for her behaviour, which Sandy pointed out to the other bride.

She’s apologised. She hasn’t made excuses. That is taking accountability. What else do you want her to do?

“She’s apologised. She hasn’t made excuses. That is taking accountability. What else do you want her to do?” said Sandy.

The truth of Sandy’s words did not compute to Alyssa as she stubbornly bit open and closed her mouth, as she had no rebuttal. Alyssa simply appeared to want to maintain anger that was not hers to have in the first place.

Jesse wrote ‘leave’, stating that the week had been heavy, but the couple will remain as Claire wrote ‘stay’ to make amends and win Jesse back.

However, the shocker of the evening came with Sandy and Dan. The bride felt her husband was uninterested in her as he spent hours exercising every day. Dan fiercely maintained that he needed this time, claiming his bride could use the time to do things she wanted.

The experts called out the need for spending time together in a short experiment.

“Dan, are you sexually attracted to Sandy?” asked Alessandra.

Dan replied he was not, to which it was made clear that building sexual chemistry is also a matter of investing emotionally.
