Episode Thirty-Six: Last Sofa Session

After the fiasco that was the final dinner party, the couples embarked on a last session with the experts, where home truths were delivered to some of the most drama-riddled couples of the experiment.

The first couple on the couch was Tahnee and Ollie, probably because the couple was in relationship bliss. The pair sat with grins as the experts made a point of taking credit for the couple’s pairing, sharing how excited they had been for the couple and how proud of the success that had seen them fall in love.

When questioned about long-distance and the future, with Ollie based in Perth and Tahnee based in Sydney, Ollie responded that he was set to move to be with Tahnee.

“A part of me is in Sydney, and that part is Tahnee,” shared Ollie.

The experts spent longer on another successful couple, Melinda and Layton, discussing the couple’s turbulent journey.

“How’s that [boardroom talk] going for you now?” asked relationship expert Aiken.

“There are moments,” replied Layton.

The CEO elaborated that the couple struggled with the power dynamic in a small way but had been finding ways to manage it better.

“We come out of the meeting, take minutes,” joked Layton as experts and participants alike laughed.

Melinda went from judging her partner somewhat harshly on their wedding day to falling in love with him and shared that her expectations entering the experiment were unrealistic, but her current partner exceeded them.

“Layton is my perfect guy,” revealed Melinda.

Then came time for the experts to stir the pot, calling Sandy and Dan to the couch.

“We were very disappointed by this outcome,” declared Aiken like a scolding school teacher.

While the pair were forced to watch a short rendition of their relationship journey on the show, Hugo’s ranting to the camera confronted Dan with the revelation of awful things he’d said about Sandy on the infamous boy’s night (and through Rupert’s butt dial).

Hugo sat with the other participants and visibly gulped. Dan glared down at Hugo instead of being embarrassed by his remarks, it was clear that some kind of ‘bro-code’ had been violated.

“Stop looking at Hugo, trying to intimidate him,” snapped Sandy, “I know what you’re trying to do.”

Dan’s angry eyes looked back at Sandy as he denied Sandy’s words. Sandy used Dan’s display as an example of what she went through during the relationship, sharing that he could be a likeable guy in front of others, but it was a different story behind closed doors.

“I categorically disagree with that,” stated Dan. In fact, almost every response the groom had towards Sandy when the experts asked about her experience of the relationship and her feelings was to disagree, diminish, and deny.

“I’ve sat here and counted the amount of times’ no’ comes out of your mouth Dan, and it’s a lot,” said Aiken.

The expert elaborated that Dan’s behaviour was belittling towards Sandy and that his constant dismissal was not okay.

Sandy revealed that while she had not received her parent’s blessing for participating in the experiment, she felt blessed by the support and love she received when she returned home after her relationship with Dan ended.

The next disappointment for the experts was Lyndall and Cam. Mel Schilling pointed out how casual and indifferent Cam appeared to behave sitting next to Lyndall, whose pain and heartache over their relationship was evident.

“What, because of how I’m sitting?” asked Cam, prickled by the observation.

“No, not because of how you’re sitting,” replied Schilling.

It was because of Tayla and Cam’s ‘sexting’. Cam’s responses were as dismissive as they had been throughout his relationship with Lyndall. However, the groom perked up when probed about the heated topic of conversation from the dinner party.

Oh, because I got my d- out?

“Oh, because I got my d- out?” asked Cam.

The experts shook their heads, and Aiken wondered about the nature of Cam and Tayla’s relationship.

“We’re just mates.”

Aiken turned to Tayla and asked her.

“I like him as a friend,” she offered.

She stated that nothing had happened and that the two were in Darwin and Tasmania, respectively, so nothing could happen. However, she noted that the option was yet to be explored if they were in the same area.

“Not that it would be explored.”

Tayla quickly tried to backtrack. However, it was too late. Experts and participants alike were shocked. Cam’s beetroot expression and frustration made the truth obvious.

Finally, Jesse and Claire were on the couch, the pair’s relationship having been thrown into turmoil by Claire’s infidelity.

“How do you feel about Jesse sitting next to him now?” asked Aiken, observing the couple’s closeness.

“I love his quirkiness,” shared Claire, “I have warm feelings for him.”

Jesse revealed that he would not give Claire parting words because she would be moving to Perth.

“I’ll see you there,” flirted Jesse.

The episode ended with the hopefulness that potentially Claire and Jesse could reunite. If that’s true, it’s yet to be confirmed.
