Miley Cyrus drops music video for Black Mirror’s Nine Inch Nails cover

Posted under the alias of her on-screen persona Ashley O, Miley Cyrus’s new video for “On A Roll” from her recent appearance on Black Mirror has been published online.

The song is a glammed-up pop version of the Nine Inch Nails track “Head Like A Hole”, released in 1990. The cover was included with the blessing of frontman and songwriter Trent Reznor.

Speaking to NME, Black Mirror’s showrunners Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones discussed the process of adapting the music. “I got to rewrite [Trent Reznor’s] lyrics in a chirpy way,” Brooker said, “I’m not the best lyricist in the world, and there’s one point where she’s singing ‘I’m stoked on ambition and verve’ instead of ‘You’re gonna get what you deserve’.”

The show sees pop-star Ashley O exploited by her producers as songs are extracted from her unconscious mind. A hologram version of her is then introduced to perform the music, a reference to recent developments in tech that have seen holographic projections of Tupac Shakur and Whitney Houston ‘perform’ live.
