As someone unfamiliar with the Dungeons & Dragons franchise, I was initially sceptical about the movie, thinking it might just be another generic fantasy comedy adventure film. But boy, was I wrong.
The story sets in a world of magical creatures and races, starring Chris Pine as the charming bard Edgin Darvis; he leads a team of adventurers, Holga Kilgore (Michelle Rodriguez), Simon Aumar (Justice Smith) and Doric (Sophia Lillis), on a hilarious, action-packed quest. Each of the adventurers had their own well-developed back story and personality. The playful and hilarious character interactions kept me engaged throughout the film.
As a viewer unfamiliar with the D&D franchise, I was totally fine following the film; it didn’t require knowing the lore behind the iconic tabletop game, even though die-hard fans will quickly pick up the inside jokes judging by the laughter here and there during the film.
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves, directed by Johnathan M. Goldstein and John Francis Daley, wowed the crowd with exceptional use of VFX paired with a wholesome story and entertaining characters, making it a relaxing and fun movie to be enjoyed by all. It has also given me some interest in gathering friends to start our Dungeons & Dragons journey.
Overall, Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves is the current must-watch film led by Chris Pine into the fantasy world. It’s funny, exciting and heartwarming. I’ll be all hands and feet for a sequel!
