Review | I am Woman

The movie is the story of Australian born singer Helen Reddy. Her 70’s hit “I Am Woman” became the feminist anthem of the decade and propelled her to international stardom.

The film opens in New York with a young Helen Reddy, (Tilda Cobham-Hervey), her daughter in tow, pursuing her dream of stardom.

Helen endures dismissive boy’s club styled interactions with male record executives and club owners. She is supported in her dream by her fellow Aussie and friend Lillian (Danielle Macdonald).

She soon meets her second husband and future manager Jeff Wald (Evan Peters), and though he says he wants to drive her career to stardom, she has to push him hard to fight for her career.

For those women who remember the 1970’s, you’ll know all the songs and recognise the feminist drive for equality yourself. This film brought that back for me and certainly made this an enjoyable movie to watch.
