Review | We Were Liars

Wow. I am emotionally shattered.

We Were Liars follows Cadence Sinclair Eastman and her tight-knit inner circle, nicknamed the Liars, during their summer escapades on her grandfather’s New England private island.

The Sinclairs are American royalty, known for their good looks, old money, and enviable bond, but after a mysterious accident changes Cadence’s life forever, everyone, including her beloved Liars, seems to have something to hide.

I watched all eight episodes in one sitting, and I haven’t recovered since. I knew something was coming, but I didn’t see that coming. The way everything ties together in the last episode?? Genuinely haunting. Bittersweet. Beautiful. Painful.

I won’t lie, the pacing at the beginning was slow, but it somehow works. You get to sit with each character, understand them, and then when things go down, it hits so hard. And I’m sorry, but I cried. Like full-on tears. Snot. Red eyes. Not okay.

Cadence and Gat’s story ruined me. Their chemistry?? Top-tier. And Gat??? I love him so much. Shubham Maheshwari did an incredible job. He brought so much softness and depth to the role – like every look, every line felt real.

You could feel all that quiet intensity and pain in him without him even having to say much. His chemistry with Cadence was perfect, and he had this screen presence that just made you instantly root for him.

I now have a crush on both Gat and Johnny (Joseph Zada, you’re about to be famous, I can feel it). Johnny’s character was another standout for me. Can’t wait to see him in the Hunger Games prequel as Haymitch OMG!

Also, not me screaming when I saw the actress who played Caroline in The Vampire Diaries again (hi Bess).

The cinematography was stunning too. Soft, haunting, dreamy but also a bit horror-y sometimes?? Those weird flashes of Cadence’s broken memory were so eerie and perfect.

Although I totally dislike Cadence’s grandpa when he straight-up called her out for being a privileged girl who literally….(did what she did)…..and faced zero consequences. Like drag her, Harris.

And okay, can we talk about the twist? THE. TWIST. My jaw. On. The. Floor. It explained everything but also made me feel soooo sick. I didn’t expect it to be that dark.

The whole thing about the fire, and her memory, and the dogs, and then Mirren and Johnny and Gat – I’m still unwell. I’m typing this with puffy eyes!

Again, shout-out to the actors. I didn’t expect much, but the whole cast delivered. No one felt miscast. They made these rich, messy, hurting people feel real.

And, oh my goodness, when Bess says maybe the fire was their punishment? Is that a hint for S2 – Family of Liars?? Please say yes, Prime Video, I need more.

NGL, Prime’s been kind of slaying lately with The Summer I Turned Pretty, Motorheads and all!

Final thoughts: If you thought this was just gonna be another rich teens in the summer kind of show, you’re wrong. It’s trauma, it’s grief, it’s love, it’s consequences, and it’s done so well.

I haven’t felt like this after a show in a while. I might have to read the book by E. Lockhart, just to suffer all over again.
