‘Rocketman’ smashes box-office records

Rocketman has broken the box-office record for a musical biopic’s opening weekend in New Zealand.

The film has shot straight to the #1 spot in New Zealand, taking $1.44 million NZD over its opening weekend, topping the previous record holder, the Freddie Mercury biopic Bohemian Rhapsody, by over $200,000.

After five days, Rocketman is sitting on a Box office total of $1.6 Million NZD. The film stars Taron Egerton and tells the story of Sir Elton John’s early career, including his issues with drugs and alcohol, and the discovery of his sexuality. Rocketman is a ‘musical fantasy’, opting for a jukebox-musical approach to its story rather than strict, sequential historical accuracy.
