New Zealand boxer, Troy Garton, has called out for community support before her Olympic qualifying tournament in Milan, Italy.

Troy, one of the country’s most successful female boxers, has aspired to join the Kiwi team since her debut in the ring ten years ago. She has represented New Zealand on the international stage, most notably at the Commonwealth Games in 2018, where she won a bronze medal. She became New Zealand’s national champion in 2017.

Venturing to the biggest sporting event in the world is no mean feat, and it has taken years of dedication to reach this point. To help her at the pinnacle of her journey, Troy has called upon the community to help turn her dream into a reality. To assist her with the rising costs of flights, accommodation, and other expenses associated with the event, Troy has set up a give-a-little page. This will enable her to compete in Milan, and eventually onto Paris.

There is no other financial support available for competitors in order to attend international qualifying events, except for funding they contribute themselves. With no support from the government and insufficient funds from organisations, it has become an enormous responsibility for athletes who represent the country on the international stage.

“I’m grateful for every contribution and support of my journey to win, and I look forward to bringing a medal home for New Zealand.”

Funding will prove to be instrumental for Troy, who has worked tirelessly towards this moment for her entire professional sporting career. Be it a small or large donation, every bit counts, and is a step closer to reaching the ultimate goal for any international athlete.

“My boxing career has been fuelled by passion, dedication, and I’m so appreciative of the unwavering support of my community,” said Troy.

Despite challenges and losses, she has grown stronger with every bout.

“Paris 2024 is my opportunity to reach the top, not just for my personal best, but for New Zealand.”

As a mother, Troy added that she has a greater appreciation for the drive competing mothers in the sports industry require to succeed. She hopes that her journey will continue to inspire other young women and athletes to pursue their dreams, and that reaching the highest level in sport following childbirth and other challenges can be done.
