An artistic expression of Matariki is set to transform a Wellington streetscape.
Known for their vibrant use of colour and powerful visual storytelling, Dreamgirls artists Miriama Grace-Smith, Xoë Hall and Gina Kiel have created a large-scale mural in the heart of the capital’s creative quarter at the intersection of Ghuznee and Leeds Streets, celebrating the themes of remembrance, connection, aspiration and renewal.
The artwork depicts a modern Wellington woman surrounded by symbols inspired by each of the nine stars and their unique meanings. Together, the mural reflects the enduring role of storytelling in connecting people to culture, community and one another.
Inspired by the artwork, Dreamgirls and Pandora have also created a collection of nine charms, each representing one of the stars and translating the collective’s distinctive artistic language into wearable keepsakes.
For Dreamgirls Art Collective, the project provided an opportunity to celebrate women, creativity and cultural storytelling through both public art and design.
At the centre of the mural is a woman embodying the spirit of connection, strength and possibility. Surrounding her are symbols inspired by the natural world, remembrance, abundance, waterways, dreams and the stars themselves, creating a visual celebration of the stories that continue to shape New Zealand.
The partnership marked Pandora’s first New Zealand artist partnership of its kind and will come to life through a public mural, in-store experiences, and an exclusive charm collection available nationwide at select stores and online for a limited time.
