Afterpay has delved into Kiwi’s spending habits, and has uncovered which sporty styles Kiwis are going for gold over.
“The excitement of global sporting events extend beyond arena courts, and into our daily lives, especially seen in apparel,” said Amanda Shannahan-Moore, Trends Expert at Afterpay.
“We’re seeing a significant uptick in purchases inspired by sports, with Gen Z and Millennials leading the charge. Their fashion choices reflect a dynamic blend of athleticism and style, showcasing how the spirit and enthusiasm towards sport influences everyday wear.”

As breakdancing makes its debut as a sport at the Paris 2024 Olympics, the baggy cargo pants category has seen an 83 percent growth this June/July compared with last year. When looking at the generational split, Millennials are totally owning the baggy pants trend with 42 percent of all growth in their hands.

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games isn’t the only thing on Kiwis’ fashion minds—caps and hats are making a strong comeback too. The cap category has jumped by 15 percent this June/July compared with last year. Millennials and Gen Z, in particular, are on the hunt for a new hat, making up a combined 72 percent of the category’s growth.

Athletes are passing the baton of cosy style to fans, with pullover hoodies seeing a 119 percent category growth.
