ALBA Honours Día de los Muertos In New Zealand

In celebration of Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead) this November, ALBA is launching a series of events to honour tradition and share its meaning with Kiwis.

To mark the occasion, ALBA’s much-loved Original Sparkling Margarita will be released in a limited-edition Day of the Dead box designed by acclaimed Mexican artist Rodolfo Baquier.

The colourful design blends traditional motifs with ALBA’s playful, modern aesthetic, creating a collectable piece that celebrates Mexican artistry.

While the packaging is new, the drink inside remains the same; it is still the Original Sparkling Margarita that Kiwis know and love.

The celebrations will begin with a series of surprise-and-delight pop-ups across the country, including flower giveaways inspired by the marigolds that line Mexico’s streets during Día de los Muertos. People will be encouraged to take a flower for themselves and another for a loved one, a gesture of remembrance and a symbol of connection.

The festivities then come to Auckland on 1st November with a party at The Hunting Lodge winery. This event will give people the chance to come together, celebrate life, and take a moment of reflection in honour of loved ones past and present.

Extending beyond in-person experiences, ALBA will also share a series of digital videos and social posts throughout the month. These will spotlight the meaning of Día de los Muertos, showcase Rodolfo’s design process, and share personal stories – bringing both education and authenticity to Kiwi audiences.

To make the celebration even more memorable, ALBA is running a number of exclusive giveaways.

ALBA fans will have the chance to win limited-edition Day of the Dead prints created by Rodolfo Baquier, limited edition ALBA x Kate Mitchell Day of the Dead tumblers (a small amount will also be available for purchase), or one of six handcrafted Mexican Spirit Animals brought directly from Mexico.

These Spirit Animals are hand-painted and serve as symbolic guardians between the spiritual and physical worlds, guiding individuals on their journeys and reminding them of their place in the universe.

Once the traditional Día de los Muertos celebrations conclude, ALBA will put a uniquely Kiwi twist on the holiday by honouring those who are still physically with us.

Writers will pop up in parks across the country to transform people’s heartfelt stories about friends, family, or loved ones into keepsake writings that can be shared as gifts. This will be followed by the creation of a special ALBA Day of the Dead book, which will weave together narratives about the holiday’s cultural roots, stunning photography from Mexico, and personal stories.

The limited-edition Day of the Dead box is available now at liquor stores nationwide.
