Bluey is set to star in her very first movie, following on from the overwhelming global success of the Australian series.

The Aussie blue heeler turned global phenomenon is about to become a movie star.

Since its launch in 2018, Bluey has become one of the most popular children’s series around the world. Set in Brisbane, the show follows Bluey, a six-year-old Blue Heeler, her younger sister Bingo, and their adventures through imaginative play.

Her feature film debut will be produced by BBC Studios and The Walt Disney Company, and is set for cinema release in 2027. Written and directed by the show’s creator Joe Brumm, it will star the voices of Melanie Zanetti and David McCormack, as well as music composed by Joff Bush.

Brumm said the film was an obvious next step following the success of the series.

“I really enjoyed the experience of working with a longer format on ‘The Sign’ in Series 3, so going even further with a feature film feels like a natural extension of that. I’ve always thought ‘Bluey’ deserved a theatrical movie,” he said.

“I want this to be an experiential event for the whole family to enjoy together. I’m excited to continue to partner with Cecilia Persson, Tom Fussell and the team at BBC Studios, and Dana Walden, Alan Bergman and Disney to bring this new ‘Bluey’ story to the big screen.”

Bluey the Movie will be produced by award-winning animation producer Amber Naismith, the name behind such movies as “Happy Feet” and “The Lego Movie”, with early Bluey series producer Richard Jeffrey also returning.

Co-Founders and Directors of Ludo Studio, Daley Pearson and Charlie Aspinwall, said it was an exciting next step for the character, and for the future of the Australian film and television industry.

“Over the past eight years, we’ve had the privilege of working alongside an extraordinary team of more than fifty artists and producers whose talent, dedication, and creativity have shaped ‘Bluey’ into the beloved series it is today. Their work has paved the way for this incredible opportunity to expand ‘Bluey’s world onto the big screen,” the pair said.

“We’re excited to continue showing Queensland as a home for world-class talent and to share a new beautiful ‘Bluey’ story by Joe Brumm with families around the world.”

Available in over 140 countries, ’Bluey’ is 2024’s most-watched series globally on Disney+, and the year’s No. 1 most-watched series on streaming to date through November among total viewers in the U.S., with more than 50.5 billion minutes watched (842 million hours).
