Famous chefs re-invent the cheese toasty

Cheese toasties are a cheap, easy and totally delicious way to enjoy a lazy night at home. But even this classic meal can get a little stale. Two slices of melted cheese between lightly toasted bread is certainly delicious, but why not spice it up a bit?

Be inspired by these mouth-watering re-inventions of the classic cheese toasty from some of the worlds greatest chefs, and turn your Friday night throw away dinner into a delicacy.

JAMIE OLIVER

Jamie Oliver is known for his healthy alternatives to classic British dinners, and this recipe is no exception.

Jamie combines classic cheddar cheese with egg yolks, crème fraiche and mustard powder to create a delicious filling to your toasty. Smear the bread with chilli chutney then drizzle some Worcestershire sauce on top to serve to finish.

This recipe explodes with flavour, and once you’ve tried it you will never go back to plain old grilled cheese.

The best part is there are no sneaky diet-breaking additions. Fresh food with minimal fat and sugar ensures that you can enjoy this super easy dinner, and maybe even indulge in a cheeky dessert afterwards.

NIGELLA LAWSON

Nigella Lawson was criticised by the food snobs of the world for including this recipe in one of her cookbooks. But Nigella was determined to show the world that a cheese toasty can be as delectable as any fancy restaurant meal.

Her recipe substituted cheddar cheese for a creamy brie and included parma ham and figs to create a fresh and unique flavour combination.

This recipe is super simple, allowing any home cook to feel like a master chef.

JAMES MARTIN

This recipe is somewhat of a hybrid between French toast and a cheesy toasty, satisfyingly sweet and savoury lovers everywhere.

All you need to do is combine egg, milk, and caster sugar in a bowl, dip in your bread and fry. Then take your two pieces of bread and stuff them full of cheese, ham and mushrooms, and grill until the cheese melts. Douse the final product in maple syrup, and your creation is ready for a taste test!

This soggy but mouthwatering meal is not for tidy eaters and may require a bib, but the delightful flavours make the experience well worth the struggle.
