Halloween is more than just a night for costumes and candy.
The flickering light of jack-o’-lanterns and the spooky season air make it perfect for movie marathons, especially for those too old to trick or treat.
Grab your popcorn, dim the lights, and check out FENNEC favourites list of top ten Halloween movie recommendations (in no particular order).
Scream
The Scream franchise is a series of cult horror films in which a psychopathic serial killer wearing a Halloween costume attempts to kill various other characters. For decades, the Ghostface mask has become one of the most iconic Halloween costumes.
Spooky Score: 3/5
Casper
Casper is a supernatural fantasy following Casper, a friendly ghost who has peacefully haunted a mansion and befriends a teenage girl. Every young girl who watched this movie when it first came out was absolutely crushing on young Devon Sawa as Casper.
Spooky Score: 1/5
Annabelle and The Conjuring Series
For those who enjoy proper scary movies, nothing is better than watching the Annabelle, Conjuring and the Nun series. If you’ve already watched them, this is the perfect time to rewatch them chronologically, like I did last year with my cousins, and it was incredible.
Spooky Score: 4/5
Child’s Play
Long before Annabelle joined the haunted doll movie category, there was Chucky. In Child’s Play, a dying serial killer uses voodoo to transfer his consciousness into a kids’ doll, which a mother gifts her child. Then, the scary fun begins.
Spooky Score: 3.5/5
Tim Burton movies
From The Corpse Bride and The Addams Family to Coraline and Beetlejuice, you can never go wrong with any Tim Burton movie during Halloween, which has the right amount of spookiness, comedy, drama, and more.
Spooky Score: 1.5/5
Midsommar
Anything Florence Pugh is involved in automatically gets a five-star rating from me. Midsommar follows her character to a summer festival in Sweden, which soon becomes dark and cultish.
Spooky Score: 5/5
Happy Death Day
Time loop movies are pretty fun to watch as you and the character slowly discover more details, leading to the climactic ending. Happy Death Day follows a uni student who must relive the day of her murder over and over again in a loop that will end only when she discovers her killer’s identity. If she can’t, she will be stuck in an insane loop, reliving a ghoulish nightmare that has become her death day.
Spooky Score: 4/5
I must mention other incredible horror movies from Blumhouse that you could add to your Halloween movie marathon, like MEGAN, Insidious and Paranormal Activity, of course, and also Ouija and The Purge.
The Twilight Saga
Any time of the year is the right time to rewatch The Twilight Saga and reminisce about your teenage years when choosing between Team Edward or Team Jacob was the most crucial decision.
Spooky Score: 1/5 (but 11/10 in all our hearts always)
Some other fun and light-hearted movies with supernatural vibes include Totally Killer, Ghostbusters, Goosebumps and Scooby Doo.
IT
Halloween is incomplete without killer clowns, and the IT movies showcase an evil clown, Pennywise, who attacks young children in a small town.
Spooky Score: 3/5
Jennifer’s Body
Lastly, Jennifer’s Body is a classic Halloween movie, mainly because of two iconic female actors, Megan Fox and Amanda Seyfried.
Spooky Score: 2/5
Whether you’re in the mood for classic horror, family-friendly fun, or something, embrace the spooky spirit of Halloween with these movies that capture the season’s magic, mystery, and mayhem.
