NETFLIX THREATENS TO BOYCOTT GEORGIA

Netflix may reconsider its “entire investment” if plans go ahead to alter the laws around abortion in the US state of Georgia.

The new legislation, should it pass, would come into effect in 2020, would prevent doctors from performing an abortion once a fetal heartbeat is detected. With the exception of cases in which the mother’s life or health is in serious danger, and in cases of rape or incest when a police report has been filed, doctors would suffer criminal penalties should they violate this law.

Currently, many of Netflix’s biggest shows are filmed in the state’s ‘Y’allywood’ industry, the third-biggest film industry in the country, including ‘Ozark’ and ‘Stranger Things’. Other productions filmed in Georgia include AMC’s ‘The Walking Dead’, as well as sequences from ‘Avengers: Endgame’, ‘Ant-Man’, and ‘Black Panther’.

Many filmmakers have declared they will refuse to work in Georgia should the legislation pass, but Netflix is the first major studio to speak up.
