PROMISING NEW RESEARCH IN GESTATIONAL DIABETES FIELD

Gestational diabetes have (maybe) met their match thanks to a new study from University of Otago.  The study found a new Fonterra probiotic which could decrease the rate of gestational diabetes by 68% in pregnant women.  The probiotic is called Lactobacillus Rhamnosus HN001, but called SureStart LactoB 001 for short.  Gestational diabetes occurs when women’s bodies are not able to produce sufficient insulin for the mother and foetus.  Researchers are hopeful that this could improve many people’s health, but Dr James Dekker was realistic ‘bringing such a product into the market usually takes several years’.  Researchers are also looking at how SureStart LactoB 001 may be able to hep people pre-disposed to diabetes.
