The cost of owning a pet weighed heavily on New Zealand accountant Sammie Atkinson, who yearned for a furry friend.
The longtime pet lover, 24, from Napier, delayed adding a dog to her family until she and husband Ben saved enough money to buy their own home with a garden.
Discovering affordable, quality products on Temu allowed the young couple to leap into pet ownership with golden retriever Honey, saving an estimated NZD 260 on getting set up.
“With the rising cost of living, we wanted to be in a financial position where we could afford to care for Honey properly. The affordability of Temu makes it easier to get quality supplies without stress, allowing us to focus on providing the best vet care for her,” said Sammie.
“I searched for puppy supplies on the (Temu) app and realised how affordable everything was.”
So far, she has bought a brush (NZD4), a towel (NZD8), bowls (NZD9) and even a bed (NZD30), estimating she has saved NZD 260 compared to purchasing the products from other retail shopfronts.

Sammie also worried about how to keep her puppy safe while the couple was out of the house at their jobs for more than eight hours a day, but she quickly found affordable pet safety items, even a camera.
“I usually work from home once a week, but having a pet camera would still provide peace of mind. I can bring Honey in (to the office) for occasional visits, but not for full workdays, so being able to monitor her remotely is important.”
And the couple aren’t stopping at supplies for Honey – they’ve also used Temu to buy home decor and organisation items, as seen on Sammie’s TikTok profile.
“We were aware that owning a pet would be a financial commitment. Temu has helped by providing budget-friendly options for pet supplies without sacrificing quality,” added Sammie.
