REVIEW | In The Heights (Spoiler-Free)

A beautiful cinematic retelling of the world famous New York musical In The Heights. It is an unapologetically joyful film that packs a punch in every direction. In The Heights was originally an award-winning musical that is deeply personal to its creator Lin-Manuel Miranda who is most famous for the musical Hamilton. But beware, it is a long film, clocking in at almost 145 minutes. Eat before hand for sure, because this is almost as good as watching the musical in real life.

The story is based in Washington Heights, New York City – a neighbourhood in uptown Manhattan that is filled with community. This positive immigrant community follows Usnavi, Benny, Vanessa, Nina and many more as they chase their dreams in the big apple. The film breaks into song for well over half of its screen time, so if musicals aren’t your thing I don’t recommend going.

It was amazing to see Lin-Manuel Miranda actually star in the movie as the ice-salesman. Every beat of this film has a moment to enjoy, a song to wriggle in your seat to. Without any spoilers, we highly recommend this film!
