As someone who spends all day typing for work before going home and spending my evenings gaming, it’s fair to say I spend more time behind a keyboard than I do in bed. Or doing pretty much anything else.
That also means I’m incredibly picky.
For me, a keyboard has to sound good. It has to feel good. I need that satisfying mechanical click every time I press a key. My idea of torture is one of those flat keyboards where it feels like you’re typing directly onto a desk.
I’ve been chasing the perfect keyboard for years.
Back in 2021, I built my dream setup around a custom wooden Soju keyboard. It wasn’t cheap. Every switch, keycap and component was hand-picked until it was exactly how I wanted it. I was on the waitlist for the parts for a year! It quickly became one of my favourite possessions, and every keyboard I’ve reviewed since has failed to knock it off the top spot.
Until now.
The Logitech G512 X has officially retired my beautiful Soju keyboard.
That beautiful custom build now hangs on the wall beside my computer like a trophy while the G512 X sits proudly on my desk, almost laughing at it.
And I honestly never thought I’d say that.

The first thing that struck me was just how premium the typing experience feels. Logitech hasn’t simply built another gaming keyboard. This genuinely feels like the company has taken inspiration from the custom keyboard community. Every keystroke feels deliberate, the switches are beautifully smooth, and the double-shot PBT keycaps have that slightly textured finish that makes typing incredibly satisfying. It’s the sort of keyboard that makes you look for excuses to keep typing.
One thing I hadn’t expected to love quite so much was returning to a 75 percent layout.
When I built my keyboard, I chose a tiny 60 percent layout because I thought it looked cool and minimalist. It certainly looked the part, but after four years of daily use, I’d had enough. No dedicated F keys. No arrow keys. Constantly relying on awkward shortcuts for things that should have been a single button press.
It turns out aesthetics only get you so far when you spend eight or more hours a day typing.
The G512 X 75 is the perfect middle ground. It still gives me the clean, compact footprint I love while bringing back all the keys I actually use every single day. I genuinely don’t think I could go back to a 60 percent keyboard now.
Of course, layout is only the beginning.
The standout feature is Logitech’s new Dual Swap technology. It allows mechanical and magnetic analogue switches to live together on the same keyboard. Instead of forcing every key to behave the same way, you can customise the ones that matter most. Your movement keys can have ultra-sensitive magnetic switches while the rest of the keyboard retains the familiar feel of traditional mechanical switches.
Initially, I wondered whether I’d actually notice the difference. I did.
Being able to adjust actuation points makes a huge difference, depending on what you’re doing. During the day, I can keep things comfortable while writing thousands of words. At night, I can make movement keys incredibly responsive for gaming. It genuinely feels like multiple keyboards built into one.
SAPP, or Second Actuation Pressure Point, is another feature I expected to dismiss as a gimmick. Instead, I ended up loving it.
The ability to assign two different actions to the same key depending on how deeply it’s pressed feels incredibly natural after only a short time. Walking with a light press before breaking into a sprint with a full press makes so much sense once you experience it.
Then there are the little details that elevate the entire package.
The programmable dual dials have become part of my daily workflow. The RGB lighting looks fantastic without screaming “I’m a gamer”. The white finish is absolutely beautiful. Even the optional acrylic wrist rest deserves a mention because it’s honestly one of the nicest wrist rests I’ve ever used. It catches the RGB lighting beautifully, feels incredibly premium and somehow makes the whole keyboard look even better.
It’s one of those accessories you don’t think you need until you try it.
What impressed me most wasn’t any individual feature, though.
It was how quickly I stopped thinking about the keyboard altogether.
After the initial excitement of customising everything, the G512 X simply became part of my desk. Whether I’m writing articles, editing videos or spending hours gaming, it just works. Every key press feels satisfying. Everything is exactly where I expect it to be. It’s comfortable enough that I forget it’s there, which is probably the highest compliment you can give any peripheral.
The biggest surprise? It replaced a keyboard I genuinely thought I’d own forever.
My custom Soju still has a place in my office. It’s hanging proudly on the wall as a reminder of my first deep dive into the mechanical keyboard world. But that’s where it’ll stay.
The Logitech G512 X has earned its place on my desk, and I can’t see it leaving anytime soon.

5/5
The Logitech G512 X isn’t just the best gaming keyboard Logitech has ever made. It’s the best keyboard I’ve ever owned. Considering what it replaced, I don’t say that lightly.
