All it took for a good movie from DC in recent years was to hire a Marvel director.
No, but on a serious note, James Gunn’s latest Superman movie, starring David Corenswet as Clark Kent/Superman, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor, was an absolute pleasure to watch.
From the very first look and teaser, the movie had already raised people’s expectations, and it did not disappoint.
Corenswet not only looks the part but also does an incredible job playing such an iconic and beloved character. Taking over from Henry Cavill’s last portrayal must have certainly put immense pressure on him, but he was terrific.
Casting Hoult, who initially auditioned for the role of Superman, as the evil villain Luthor, obsessed with destroying the Man of Steel, was a brilliant decision from the executives involved. He gave a stellar performance, and his character was witty, intelligent, and always a few steps ahead, showing me that I have not been hating to my maximum potential LOL.
I was not expecting to see the Justice Gang in action, featuring Green Lantern (Nathan Fillion), Hawkgirl (Isabela Merced), and Mr Terrific (Edi Gathegi). Despite being side characters, they were all memorable, especially Mr Terrific. Man was aura farming throughout the movie!
I was thrilled to see my girl, Isabela Merced, in yet another hit movie; she’s been having her moment and delivering greatly.
And of course, everyone’s favourite journalist, Lois Lane. She was perfect! The scene where she’s interviewing Clark Kent as Superman in her living room was a standout.
Shoutout to two other fantastic side characters – Jimmy Olsen (Skyler Gisondo) and Eve (Sara Sampaio). They were hilarious and too cute!
I felt so bad for the Superman Robots. Also, I spotted the Bradley Cooper and Sean Gunn cameo immediately, y’all.
The post-credit scene with Milly Alcock as Supergirl was amazing, and I can’t wait to see more of her in the future as Superman’s cousin in her own movie coming next year.
Last but not least, SUPERDOG KRYPTO – he was adorable. James Gunn mentioned that although he was fully CGI, he was a recreation of his own real-life doggo.
The entire cast and crew put in a great effort, and they had great chemistry both on and off-screen. They actually seemed super passionate about the project.
Visually, the movie was also incredibly well-made. The action sequences were beautifully done and amazing to watch on the big screen.
For the nerds, the movie was very comic-accurate. It showed how, despite being an alien with superpowers, Superman, the character, has his own weaknesses and feels pain and human emotions, and can get hurt. He even saved a squirrel in one of the scenes – like how amazing he is! And when he gets mad about Krypto being missing, damn, wow!
Another standout scene was when Superman was fighting his own self (a villain made by Luthor Corp).
Although there has been some backlash online (Snyder fans, I’m calling you out), the movie was filled with hope and kindness and lowkey makes you actually want to be a better person.
I am also loving the memes and social posts that have come out of this movie – they’re all so positive and empowering and PUNK ROCK!
It was super, man! No notes, just perfection.
