REVIEW | The Hunt for Treasure Continues on Outerbanks

Outerbanks Season 2 Trailer Photo

We were big fans of the first season of Outerbanks, so after much patience, we are finally blessed with the second instalment.

We begin following our star-crossed lovers, Sarah Cameron and John B, arriving in the Bahamas after escaping on a boat into a deadly storm at the end of S1. Cleo and Captain T. are the ones who help them escape, without knowing anything about the two. After hearing the news while at sea that John B is a fugitive with a hefty reward if handed into the police, Captain T, excitedly plans to hand the two over once they reach the shore.

Sarah and John B. escape just in the nick of time and are forever running away from the system. Now that they’re at the Bahamas – where the gold they’re looking for is supposedly transported to – John B can’t sit still.

Frustrated that they are running away and John B is wanted for a crime he didn’t commit, the two just want to go home – Outerbanks. John B and Sarah sends a message to their friends; Kie, JJ and Pope, letting them know that 1) they’re alive and 2) they need to help clear John B. name, stat.

More unsettling truths unfold during this Season, Pope discovers that this treasure hunt is not just about missing gold anymore, families turn against each other, break-ups and make-ups – all sprinkled with very dodgy driving, aligators (don’t ask) and near-misses.

Throughout the Season we see Madelyn Cline, who plays Sarah Cameron, go through the most conflicting feelings a 16-year-old should never need to go through. Growing up with her overprotective father, she realises his motives are dirty and he should not be celebrated. She makes this clear to herself and to her friends. “She’s one of us [a pogue]”. However, at the end of the day, Ward Cameron is her father – she just doesn’t know how to feel anymore. It hurts her to see how happy John B is when Ward is beaten. However, she is happy that Ward is getting what he deserves. Poor baby.

Outerbanks is an enjoyable teen-series with a beautiful and diverse cast. Madelyn steals the show with her impressive emotional performances, and Drew Starkey, who plays Rafe Cameron, effortlessly falls into the ultimate troubled-evil-character-type which really climaxed in Season 2 – and even me, someone who has watched horror films for 6 weeks straight *for science*, am a little frightened by Rafe’s deranged character and actions.

One thing that was a bit overdone, in my opinion, was the amount of bickering and yelling the teen gang would have whenever something bad happened (and this happened often).

Kie yells out, out of frustration, giving up the whole group’s hide-out position, they run away, Pope drops his camera, damaging valuable evidence, they run into their car and spend a good two minutes just blaming eachother instead of running away from someone who might actually kill all of them?? Makes perfect sense right?

Nonetheless, OBX2 was a great series, leaving us with an unexpected cliff hanger. Like, where did it even come from? Now we have to wait for S3? Is there even going to be S3? Can they announce it already and put us out of this misery???
