REVIEW | Wicked

I’m not usually a musical theatre girly, but Wicked blew me away! Jon M. Chu’s adaptation of the beloved Broadway show is everything a film musical should be—emotional, visually spectacular, and bursting with unforgettable performances.

Cynthia Erivo as Elphaba is phenomenal. She carries the film with her powerful vocals and deeply empathetic portrayal of a misunderstood character. Her rendition of “Defying Gravity” is nothing short of iconic, with a thrilling cinematic finale. Erivo’s performance is layered with vulnerability and strength, making her journey from outcast to defiant hero all the more compelling. It is also worth noting that all of the vocals are recorded live in each shot. That is exactly how they sounded! Incredible!

Ariana Grande is a delight as Glinda, showcasing her vocal prowess and comedic chops. Her performance of “Popular” is one of the film’s standout moments, filled with charm and wit. While Glinda begins as self-absorbed and bubbly, Grande brings depth to the character as her friendship with Elphaba evolves. The chemistry between Erivo and Grande is electric, anchoring the story with moments of heartfelt connection and playful rivalry.

Visually, Wicked offers a dazzling mix of practical sets and CGI, creating an immersive Oz that feels both fantastical and grounded. While some critics noted the cinematography could have been more vibrant, the rich detail in costumes and production design more than compensates. The “Defying Gravity” sequence alone is worth the ticket price, blending stunning effects with emotional intensity to deliver a jaw-dropping spectacle.

The supporting cast adds even more magic. Jonathan Bailey’s Fiyero is charming and fun, Michelle Yeoh is commanding as Madame Morrible, and Jeff Goldblum’s Wizard is equally whimsical and cunning. These performances, combined with the film’s epic score, make for a viewing experience that’s as emotionally resonant as it is visually impressive.

Wicked is a triumph, capturing the heart of the Broadway show while expanding its world for the big screen. Whether you’re a devoted fan or new to Oz, this film will sweep you off your feet. It’s not just a movie; it’s an experience.
