Rialto has announced the launch of Rialto View, a new streaming app built on a single guiding principle: cinema and the arts deserve a home, not a feed.
Developed in New Zealand and shaped by decades of curatorial expertise, Rialto View brings together the strength of Rialto Film’s internationally-recognised cinema programming with the cultural depth of Rialto Arts.
Audiences will discover:
RIALTO FILM – World & Festival Cinema
A hand-selected library of festival winners, international gems, arthouse icons, boundary-pushing debuts, and films that resonate long after the credits roll.
Highlights include the BAFTA-nominated Ammonite, set within a broader programme of contemporary and classic cinema, and director spotlights dedicated to filmmakers whose work continues to challenge, provoke, and endure, beginning with Werner Herzog.
RIALTO ARTS – Performance, Literature & Cultural Documentary
A key focus of the Arts strand is Shakespeare: The Rise of a Genius, a landmark documentary series tracing William Shakespeare’s ascent from provincial beginnings to enduring cultural influence.
Featuring Dame Judi Dench and leading voices of contemporary theatre, the series explores how language, performance, and imagination forged works that continue to shape storytelling across centuries.
Also featured is Pene Pati in Recital, capturing the internationally celebrated New Zealand tenor in performance. The film gives audiences access to an artist whose career bridges global opera stages and local cultural pride, reinforcing Rialto Arts’ commitment to excellence in on-screen performance.
Rialto Arts champions art and performance documentaries from New Zealand, foregrounding local voices whose work carries international significance.
March highlights include films by acclaimed New Zealand documentarian Shirley Horrocks, whose sensitive, observant portraits explore creativity, labour, and cultural identity with rare intimacy and respect.
Together, these works reflect Rialto Arts as a destination for audiences seeking depth, context, and enduring cultural expression.
Also on Rialto Arts:
- Dance with Rodin: Where sculpture breathes, and movement awakens, Julien Lestel’s striking work transforms emotion into motion through contemporary dance.
- Ingrid Bergman: In Her Own Words – An intimate portrait of one of cinema’s most luminous figures, told through personal archives and unseen footage.
The platform launch highlights New Zealand cinema through works such as The Moon Is Upside Down by Loren Taylor, featuring Elizabeth Hawthorne, reinforcing Rialto’s commitment to supporting local filmmakers and performers.
