She was warned by friends not to marry into royalty

Meghan Markle has described the past year as a royal family member as “hard.”

The Duchess of Sussex said she has tried to put on a brave front since marrying Harry in May last year, however, was not prepared for the intensity of tabloid interest. Markle said that her British friends warned her of marrying into royalty as the British tabloids could “destroy” her life.

Markle spoke to ITV documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey and explained her struggles.

“It’s hard. I don’t think anybody could understand that, but in all fairness, I had no idea, which probably sounds difficult to understand.

“In all honesty, I have said for a long time to H – that is what I call him – it’s not enough to just survive something, that’s not the point of life. You have got to thrive. You have got to feel happy, and I think I really tried to adopt this British sensibility of a stiff upper lip,” she said.

The royal couple has received heavy backlash after reportedly using four private jets over 11 days in summer, despite often vocalising environmental issues. Singer Elton John said he provided the couple and their child with a private jet for “much-needed protection.”

The American former-actress is suing the Mail this weekend over a breach of privacy which involved a published private letter between the duchess and her estranged father. The Duke of Sussex is also taking legal action after the Sun and Daily Mirror allegedly intercepted voice messages.

Markle said tabloids have released false information regarding her and her marriage which has made her life “complicated.”

“When people are saying things that are just untrue, and they are being told they are untrue but they are allowed to still say them, I don’t know anybody in the world who would feel that’s OK and that is different from just scrutiny.

“The good thing is that I have got my baby and I have got my husband and they are the best,” she said.
