You thought the pandemic was bad? Turns out 2024 is bumping up the classic hits – depression. Whether it’s seasonal, long-term, or something just sprouting, depression often starts small and snowballs into an uncontrollable mountain. Stress can be a massive contributor, and managing it isn’t always about eliminating it. Learn to ride those chaotic waves and you might find they are a lot easier to surf. With the cost of living crisis, housing crisis, and life in general being a crisis – everything seems to be a big stress fest. We’ve put together some small helpful management tools you can try out. As always, we highly recommend seeking out professional help.
Move Your Body
Exercise is like that friend who always knows how to lift your spirits. Whether it’s yoga, dancing, walking, or swimming, find something you enjoy and stick with it. It helps release those feel-good endorphins and lowers stress hormone levels. Make it fun, and remember, the hardest part is getting started.
Learn to Relax
It sounds easy, but relaxing takes practice, especially when stress is running high. Try progressive relaxation: tense and relax each muscle group from your toes to your head. Breathe deeply and feel that glorious sense of release!
Prioritise Sleep
Getting quality sleep is a non-negotiable part of managing stress. Without it, your immune system suffers, and your ability to handle stress goes down the drain. Set a calming bedtime routine, dim the lights, sip chamomile tea, and ditch the screen time.
Practice Deep Breathing
Deep breathing is the ultimate stress hack. Inhale deeply through your nose, hold for a few seconds, and exhale slowly through your mouth. It’s simple, free, and can be done anywhere—no app or Wi-Fi is needed!
Embrace Mindfulness & Meditation
Mindfulness keeps you grounded in the here and now, helping to clear your mind of stress clutter. Even a few minutes of meditation each day can work wonders. Think of it as a mini spa day for your brain – no reservation needed.
Create a Relaxation Ritual
In our busy lives, it’s easy to forget to unwind. Set aside time for a daily relaxation ritual. It could be a warm bath, lighting candles, or turning off your phone for the night – bonus points for Epsom salts, as magnesium can double your relaxation benefits.
Stay Connected with Friends & Family
There’s nothing like a chat with a good friend or cuddling up with your pet to reduce stress. Whether a coffee date or a Netflix binge, a human (or furry) friend is a great stress antidote. Choose your company wisely; some folks bring calm, and others bring chaos.
Embrace Nature
A little fresh air and greenery can go a long way in melting stress away. Whether a walk in the park or just sitting under a tree, nature has this magical way of putting everything into perspective. Lucky for us, New Zealand is full of natural beauty—there’s always a park or a beach nearby!
Set Boundaries & Learn to Say No
If your to-do list is as long as your grocery receipt, it might be time to say “no.” Flex that assertiveness muscle and set boundaries to protect your time. It’s tough, especially for the people-pleasers out there (hello, I see you!), but it’s essential for keeping your stress in check.
Cultivate Gratitude
Gratitude is a game-changer when it comes to stress. Start a daily gratitude journal – jot down a few things you’re thankful for, even if it’s something minor, like a perfectly made cup of coffee. Gratitude helps shift your focus away from stress and negativity.
Stress is part of life, but it doesn’t have to run the show. By weaving these simple tips into your routine, you’ll be better equipped to handle the ups and downs that life throws you. So hit that pause button when needed, and give yourself the care you deserve!
