Super Mario is Taking Over

The world of video games has always had a loyal audience around the world, with many continuing to play their favourite games for several decades and more.

Classic video games like Pacman and Donkey Kon are all fan favourites, but one that has truly lasted the test of time is Super Mario. The Italian brothers, Mario and Luigi are arguably two of the most well-known video game characters in history, and so it would only be a matter of time before their story would be made into a movie.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie,” was released internationally on the 6th of April (New Zealand time) and has won over adoring fans. At a running time of just over 90 minutes, the movie is a perfect activity for the whole family, and stars the talents of Chris Pratt, Anya Taylor-Joy, and Jack Black as Bowser.

Globally, the film has grossed over $700 million (USD,) making it one of the most successful animated movies of all time. How successful you might ask? Well having already beaten the likes of “Moana,” “Madagascar,” and “The Incredibles,” “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is predicted to make over a billion dollars, putting in the ranks alongside other high-grossing films such as “Frozen,” “Minions,” and “Finding Dory.”

The film’s plot is relatively straightforward, following Mario and Luigi and their mission to stop a world-dominating force, with the help of Princess Peach along the way. But having made nearly $100 million dollars in a three-day period, the film still has a strong foreseeable future.

With audience numbers growing around the world (a 12 percent rise in Australia, and a 60 percent increase in the United States,) the film is ranking number one release this year in 28 countries, including Germany, Italy, Mexico, and the United Kingdom.

In Latin America, “The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is the second biggest film to come from Universal Pictures, behind “Fast & Furious 7” which was released in 2015.

“The Super Mario Bros. Movie” is available in Cinemas nationwide.
