Breast cancer is the most common cancer among Kiwi women and the third most common cancer overall in New Zealand.
While breast cancer is more common in women aged 50 and over, it can affect younger women, too. And although rare, men are not immune; around 25 men are diagnosed each year.
The good news? Breast cancer is highly treatable when detected early.
The Breast Cancer Foundation NZ is encouraging women to get familiar with their bodies and prioritise regular self-checks. Knowing what’s normal for you means you’re more likely to notice changes and act on them quickly.
If you’re not sure where to start, Pre Check is a free app designed to guide you through the process. Visual, tactile and audio cues show you how to check for signs of breast cancer, while illustrated guides help you learn what’s normal for your body.
You can even set personalised reminders to “touch, look and check” regularly, giving you a simple way to stay on top of your breast health.
Checking your breasts is easy as TLC.
- Touch both breasts. You’re feeling for any lumps or thickening of the tissue, even up into the armpits.
- Look in front of a mirror. Can you see any physical changes to the breast shape, skin or nipples?
- Check any breast changes with your doctor, even if you’ve had a mammogram recently.
Early detection saves lives. Get to know your normal today.
BCFNZ provides education and awareness about the importance of early detection to reduce the number of women dying of breast cancer. The Foundation has produced a range of targeted materials approved by its Medical Advisory Committee.
