A standalone sequel to the late 90s movie of the same title, I did not know what to expect when I watched the latest Twisters movie, which dove into the dangerous yet exciting world of tornado chasing. It was a great blend of action, drama, and stunning visual effects.
The film was centred around Kate Cooper, portrayed by the versatile Daisy Edgar-Jones. Kate was a former storm chaser whose life was changed by a devastating tornado during college, after which she moved to New York City to work in a weather report office.
Five years later, Kate’s old friend Javi, played by Anthony Ramos, brings her back to the stormy plains of Oklahoma. He needs Kate’s expertise to test a groundbreaking new tracking system, promising scientific advancement and the thrill Kate has avoided for years.
When she returns, Kate encounters Tyler Owens, who was brought to life by Glen Powell. Tyler is the quintessential charming, reckless daredevil with a YouTube channel called Tornado Wranglers. As a tornado-chasing superstar, Tyler thrives on the adrenaline of capturing nature’s fury on camera, often pushing the limits to gain the most sensational footage.
As tornado season resurfaces, the film gets intense with sequences of storm-chasing action and director Lee Isaac Chung’s breathtaking visuals do not disappoint. The film’s special effects stood out, with realistic tornadoes.
I will watch anything Daisy Edgar-Jones is in, and she did not disappoint. Her layered and emotional performance captured Kate’s internal struggle between her passion for tornado chasing and her lingering trauma.
At the same time, Glenn Powell maintained the charisma from his last rom-com, Anyone But You with Sydney Sweeney, with an added twist of a country cowboy’s charm. His portrayal of Tyler was an exciting contrast to Kate’s more measured and analytical approach.
Other supporting cast members included Brandon Perea, Daryl McCormack, Maura Tierney, Sasha Lane, Kiernan Shipka, and David Corenswetdid. Still, they could have added more to the movie, and it felt like wasted potential. The movie could also have avoided showing the romance between Kate and Tyler since it felt unnecessary.
All in all, Twisters is a visual spectacle that stands out in the natural disasters and action movie genre.
