Woolworths x Auckland Symphony Orchestra

Woolworths has partnered with the Auckland Symphony Orchestra (ASO) to transform one of Easter’s most recognisable nursery rhymes into an epic orchestral performance.

Launched this week, the collaboration sees the classic recorder tune Hot Cross Buns reimagined as a full orchestral arrangement performed by the ASO, creating a hero audio and video piece designed to strike a chord with audiences and put Woolworths’ hot cross buns centre stage ahead of Easter.

Woolworths NZ Marketing Manager – Own Brand & Fresh, Lucy Key, said the collaboration was designed to take something Kiwis already know and love and celebrate it in a way that stands out during the busy Easter period.

The campaign draws on a familiar cultural moment for many New Zealanders, learning Hot Cross Buns on the recorder at school and elevates it into a large-scale symphonic performance, linking the simplicity of the tune with the scale and craft behind Woolworths’ Easter bakery range.

Nicola Couch, Musician and President of the Auckland Symphony Orchestra, said the project reflected the progression from simple beginnings to something much larger.

“There is a wonderful magic in the contrast between a child’s rendition of Hot Cross Buns on the recorder and the epic sounds of a symphony orchestra playing the same tune,” she said

“By partnering with Woolworths on this unique project, we are bringing a simple, time-honoured nursery rhyme to life through an enriched lens, bridging the warmth of nostalgia with a fresh, elevated experience.”

To bring the campaign closer to shoppers, Aucklanders can sample both the soundtrack and Woolworths’ limited-edition Cinnabon hot cross bun across the city this week.

Digital trucks will pop up in the central city, where Kiwis can watch the orchestral arrangement play out on a moving billboard while nabbing a bag of free hot cross buns.
