Your Everyday Drink Bottle is Due for an Upgrade

Reusable drink bottles are one of those things we all own, love, and probably don’t think too hard about. They come with us to work, the gym, school drop-offs, road trips and everywhere in between. They live in our bags, roll around in the car, sit on our desks and get refilled again and again. We carry them with the best intentions too. Staying hydrated. Being more sustainable. Doing the right thing.

But here is the part most of us would rather not think about. A lot of reusable drink bottles are actually a nightmare to clean properly. Narrow straws. Tiny seals. Hidden grooves. All the places moisture loves to sit and quietly turn into mould or grime if you miss a wash or two. It is not about being gross or lazy. Life is just busy, and when something is annoying to clean, it is usually the first thing to get put off.

This is exactly the frustration that led New Zealand mum and founder of Mode & Opal, Natasha Burger, to rethink the humble drink bottle altogether.

“As a mum, a professional and someone who enjoys being active, my drink bottle was constantly leaking, growing mould in the straw and becoming one more thing I had to manage,” said Natasha. “I realised the issue wasn’t people being lazy. It was bad design.”

Between school lunches, workdays, workouts, and the general chaos of everyday life, Natasha found herself dealing with the same annoying bottle problems over and over. Leaks in the bag. That weird smell you cannot quite get rid of. Straws that are almost impossible to properly clean. Eventually, it clicked that the problem was not users failing to look after their bottles. The problem was bottles that were not designed to fit into real life.

Mode & Opal was born from that lived frustration. The brand’s stainless steel bottles have been designed to remove the small pain points that make staying hydrated feel like another chore. The opening is wide enough to be properly cleaned. The straw system comes apart easily. There are fewer hidden nooks where moisture can sit. It is the kind of thoughtful design that quietly makes everyday habits easier.

“If a bottle is quick and simple to clean, you are far more likely to do it regularly,” she explained. “That is where good design quietly improves everyday health.”

There is also the style factor. Let’s be honest, if something looks good, you are more likely to actually use it. Natasha wanted a bottle that felt premium enough to carry into meetings, throw into a gym bag, or hand to your kid for school without compromising on looks or practicality.

“I named it Mode & Opal because it had to look good and feel premium,” she said. “People do not want to choose between style and practicality. They want both.”

The response from customers has echoed that sentiment. Many have switched from well-known bottle brands that looked great but were a pain to live with. The feedback Natasha hears most often is relief.

“People tell me they did not realise how much mental load their old bottle added until they did not have to think about it anymore,” she said.

Mode & Opal bottles are designed to move easily between busy days, gym sessions, office desks and school bags. They are insulated to keep drinks cold or warm, leak-proof for throwing into your bag, and made with safe materials that feel good to use every day. It is a small switch that can make a surprisingly big difference to how effortless staying hydrated feels.

“At the end of the day, this is about making healthy choices easier,” said Natasha. “Staying hydrated should not come with hidden hygiene risks or extra stress.”

Mode & Opal have a growing range of colours and sizes, including kid-friendly options and new shades launching soon.
