Food that tastes better the day after

While everyone loves a good helping of leftovers, it sounds crazy that a homecooked meal could actually be better the night after. But in fact, it is true!

After a series of very scientific tests, which included some Gordon Ramsay level cooking and the enjoyment of many leftover meals we have the final verdict. Here are the top five meals that actually taste better the day after.

Pumpkin Soup

A classic winter dish that is super cheap, super easy and super delicious. When making soup, it is incredibly easy to overdo the quantities, so why not stop fighting the inevitable and make enough soup for the whole week!

Pumpkin soup keeps incredibly well as the extra time given in the fridge allows the ingredients to mix and release all their tasty flavours properly. Science says this is because of the slow-moving flavour molecules in the dish, but whatever the reason, this dish is a leftover must.

Fried Rice

This one is a little more complex but is the epitome of night-after-excellence. Rather than making the whole dish and storing it overnight for a quick meal, there is an art to enjoying leftover fried rice.

First, boil up your rice, as usual, then before making the rest of the dish, store the rice overnight in the fridge. This firms up the rice and makes it slightly stiffer for the drying process. This way, you will have a dish full of tasty and flavourful fried rice rather than a gloopy overcooked mess. Your welcome!

Pineapple and Pork

Whether it is a Thai inspired curry or a classic Chinese sweet-and-sour dish, we all know that pineapple and pork make for a winning combination. And in even better news, their leftovers are pretty tasty too!

Twenty-four hours in the fridge will do wonders for this dish as the flavours will meld together more, and the strong pineapple flavour will be given the chance to really take hold of the dish. Yum

Spicy Chilis

For those who don’t have the strongest of tongues when it comes to spice, this tip is just for you. If a meal is a bit too sharp straight after cooking, you may find that the day after it has dulled a bit.

This will allow you to enjoy your flavourful dish without the fear of steam bursting out of your ears. Delicious chilis can become your speciality, and you can embrace all the spices on the shelf, knowing that your dish will not suffer after a night cooling off in the fridge.

Fish Cakes

This recipe is very similar to the fried rice method. Once you have mixed up your potatoes, spices and fish chuck your concoction in the fridge overnight. It gives the flavours a chance to mix up and become stronger, while also providing the pot with the chance to cool.

This way, when you go to form your fishcakes, they will not break apart and will take better to the breadcrumb coating. What a tasty solution to what was a bit of a messy problem!
