Girlbosses Of Sharesies

Professionals in the finance and tech industry, Brooke Roberts and Sonya Williams, are the girboss duos, co-founders, and co-CEOs of Sharesies, developing your wealth your way.

While Roberts’ interest lies in the intersection of finance, tech, and creative industries, Williams is inspired by the opportunity to help people get ahead by offering different investment ways.

“NZ also has a thriving and supportive business culture where people are willing to give their insights and support you along the way,” said Williams.

Roberts’ previous roles as a finance, product, and marketing professional at AJ Park, Kiwibank and Xero helped her co-found Sharesies, and Williams’ experience in product and marketing, along with her work at Xero and the banking sector, enabled her to join the Sharesies team in creating solutions that empower people with their finances.

They both agree on the ability of technology to democratise access and believe that a greater sense of purpose and a “pay it forward” mentality are essential to the industry.

When asked about their role models, Roberts and Williams expressed gratitude towards the many individuals who have mentored and coached them, emphasising the importance of building solid connections and nurturing authentic relationships.

“Many, many people that have “raised me”. Whether it be my bosses, friends/colleagues and those who actively mentored or coached me. Too many to call out in person,” said Roberts.

To their younger selves, Roberts’ advice was to prioritise curiosity, passion, and peer relationships, while Williams stressed the importance of teamwork and the confidence to seek answers.

“Teamwork does make the dream work. When you build strong relationships and work together, you can accomplish much more than when you stick to yourself.”

The highlight of their careers thus far is the founding of Sharesies, which aligns with their shared purpose of creating financial empowerment for everyone.

“How often do you hear “I wish I knew more about managing money earlier”? I’m chuffed future generations won’t be saying that.”

They are motivated by the barriers in the financial world and how they can be eliminated or improved to create much better experiences.

“It’s so great to talk to my nieces and nephews about what companies they’re keen to invest in, and my one-year-old has an investment portfolio, too.”

Roberts’ and Williams’ experiences in the finance and tech industry, along with their shared purpose and passion for creating financial empowerment for everyone, drive their commitment to innovation, teamwork, and authentic relationships.

They are also inspired by the impact of innovation in the wealth industry on people’s lives by connecting individuals, their money, and companies they know and love.

“Although we’re seven years in and have come so far, there’s still much we’re keen to achieve.”
