Go On, Do Something New, New Zealand!

Comedians Madeleine Sami and Jackie van Beek have teamed up with Tourism New Zealand to sing all about this country’s quirkiest attractions like Ohakune’s giant carrot, Dunedin’s Baldwin Street, and Wānaka’s Puzzling World, to name a few. The duo implore Kiwis to “bypass the bach this weekend” in favour of trying something different.

The music video featuring the weird and wonderful parts of Aotearoa has been released as part of Tourism NZ’s domestic tourism campaign. The campaign, Do Something New, New Zealand was launched earlier in the year in response to COVID border closures and aimed to encourage Kiwis to explore their own back yard and beyond.

“We tend to go to the same places year in and year out – we need Kiwis to infuse something ‘new’ into their holiday plans, whether that is a brand new region or something new in their hometown,” expressed Tourism New Zealand chief executive Stephen England-Hall.

The last time a catchy tune was used to remind Kiwis that tourism begins at home was the ‘don’t leave town till you’ve seen the country’ advertising campaign back in the 1980s.

“While the song is just one part of our wider ‘Do Something New’ campaign, we hope it will have the staying power like ‘don’t leave town’ and people will be able to recall it for years to come.”
