Following the sold-out success of his debut, Auckland-based contemporary artist Josh Davison has joined Turua Gallery with his highly anticipated second solo exhibition, In Colour.
Running from the 22nd of August to the 3rd of September 2025, this exclusive showcase invites viewers into Davison’s evolving world of sculptural painting and vibrant natural forms.
Davison’s distinctive practice bridges the realms of painting and sculpture, employing traditional oil techniques such as imprimatura and sfumato, methods favoured by Renaissance masters, to create richly layered, three-dimensional works.
His innovative use of palette knives and custom textural tools results in mesmerising floral compositions that appear to bloom directly from the canvas.
”I’ve titled my second solo exhibition In Colour, a reference to the album by Jamie xx, which played a pivotal role during my early years as an artist. The title also resonates with the album’s exploration of colour harmony—an idea central to this body of work, where my use of the full colour wheel is a consistent thread,” said Davison.
”This exhibition continues my exploration of three-dimensional painting and palette knife techniques. While some works represent larger stylistic leaps, the overall direction reflects a refining of my process, with a focus on further integrating and merging these approaches. ”
He added that at the core of this evolution is his overarching goal: to bridge the gap between sculpture and oil painting. This junction remains relatively under-explored in contemporary art.
“Through this synthesis, I aim to highlight the inherent beauty of nature by accentuating its symmetry and drawing attention to the rich saturation of colours that often go unnoticed.’’
Each artwork of In Colour is the result of months of meticulous craftsmanship, blending historical techniques with contemporary innovation. The result is a collection that is both meditative and dynamic, offering a fresh perspective on the beauty and resilience of the natural world.
Turua Gallery is proud to host this landmark exhibition. It has partnered with MyArt – an organisation which allows you to buy the art you really want from galleries in New Zealand and Australia.
