PlayStation has just launched The Access Controller, designed to address challenges faced by players with disabilities in gaming. These challenges include difficulty holding a standard controller for extended periods, accurately pressing buttons or triggers, and positioning thumbs and fingers optimally. The Access Controller for PS5 is a customisable accessibility controller kit aimed at helping gamers overcome these obstacles, enabling them to play comfortably and for longer durations.

Key Features:

Versatility: The Access controller provides exceptional versatility with a wide range of stick caps and button caps, allowing players to customise their gaming experience based on their strength, range of motion, and physical needs.

Compatibility: It can be comfortably used on flat surfaces like wheelchair trays, allowing for a full 360-degree orientation. Up to two Access controllers and one DualSense wireless controller can be used as a single virtual controller, offering flexibility in device combinations and collaborative gameplay.

Customisation: On the PS5 console, players can create up to 30 control profiles, adjust stick sensitivity and dead zone settings, or deactivate buttons according to their preferences.

Expansion Ports: The controller features four industry-standard 3.5mm expansion ports, allowing gamers to connect additional buttons, specialty trigger switches, and compatible accessories. For instance, the Logitech G Adaptive Gaming Kit for Access Controller is developed in collaboration with accessibility experts.

To set up a new Access controller, refer to the recently launched support hub with detailed how-to guides and video tutorials. The hub guides users through customising hardware and software features for an optimal gaming setup.

The Access controller works with every game available on PS5. For games requiring DualSense-specific features, it can be used alongside a DualSense controller for full functionality.

SIE created the Access Controller as part of its mission to connect the world through play. Inspired by the vision of “Play Has No Limits,” the controller aims to break down barriers for disabled players. Accessibility experts and consultants were crucial in providing feedback and insights throughout the development process.

Players typically take seven to ten days to acclimate to the Access controller’s novel form factor and adaptable functionality, though individual needs may vary.

Accessibility organisations and experts provided invaluable feedback, ranging from design considerations to hands-on evaluation of prototypes. Their support and insights were integral to the development of the Access controller.
