Daily Bread has been crowned the champion of this year’s the Great New Zealand Hot Cross Bun competition.
Based in Auckland, this impressive win marks the bakery’s second consecutive year taking out the title.
“Daily Bread has wowed us with their fluffy, buttery, sourdough take on a traditional hot cross bun,” said competition hosts, Baking New Zealand.
“This year’s bun was perfect. I was so happy. Normally I’m just about 90 percent happy about the finished bun, but this year I couldn’t make it any better. It was perfect,” shared Daily Bread’s head baker, Patrick Welzenbach.
What makes Daily Bread’s hot cross buns so delicious? For starters, they are made using a long fermentation process that allows for its buns to be springy, moist, flavourful and unique. They also use a lievito madre sourdough starter, which allows these billowy buns to have a mild profile and none of the sour taste that can be found with using traditional sourdough starters.
Daily Bread’s bakers also pack the hot cross buns with sweet rum-soaked fruit, candied citrus peel, before generously finishing the bun off with a sticky orange and cardamom glaze.
Daily Bread’s hot cross buns are currently available in-store, online, and at selected Auckland supermarket retailers like New World, Farro and Foursquare.
