Now that we’ve had a bit of time to soak everything in, here is our review on the very first season of the Bachelorette New Zealand.

It first started with the ever-so-gorgeous Lesina, with not only the looks but also the brains, a doctor who knows what she wants, screening all 22 bachelors for what it seemed to be… herself.

In true New Zealand reality TV show fashion, there were many twists and turns, one of the biggest being bringing in Lily McManus, former Bachelor New Zealand Season 3 runner up, as the second bachelorette for this season. This was a tasteful twist in our opinion, and the way the two girls carried themselves showed true #girlfriendgoals. As a result, it showcased female companionship in a light we would not normally see on reality TV.

The boys, however, had to make a decision fast, although for some it was obvious that they were cast for Lily/Lesina, while others were less clear. Nonetheless, the girls did not tolerate anyone who jumped between the two and as a bachelor you had to know who you were courting, sooner rather than later.

It wasn’t going to be a smooth ride for the two ladies, however, with a help of a ‘mole’, as their eyes and ears in the Bachelor Mansion, it made ruthless decision making slightly easier. Anyone who put a foot in the wrong place in actor Daryl Habraken’s eyes, was going to be in serious trouble. All we can say is… RIP Glenn. You tried.

The 22 eligible bachelors were a great example of Kiwi men, highlighting the taboo subject that men should be allowed to be ’emotional’ and 100% in their feels. The bachelors did not hold back in showing affection, emotions and their feelings deep, deep down. Just like how Lesina and Lily showed us the power of female companionships, so did the boys, with bromance levels sky-rocketing, we loved every second of it! Go boys!

With the show nearing to an end and many surprise eliminations and abrupt exits later, The Bachelorette New Zealand kept us on the edge of our seat to the very last second.

Lily gave every bachelor her all, without making any silent premature decisions before her final rose. It was impossible for us to know who she was leaning towards. Lily was a real ‘go with the flow’ chick, and that’s the type of mindset we all should be aiming for in the dating realm. Lily taught us to not think too much into the situation and to go with your gut, if someone makes you feel great and you can be 110% yourself and nothing else, then that’s really all you need.

Lesina was our strong-willed go-getter, setting an example for young girls alike. She left the show with the one person that always has her back, herself. She did not cave into pressure from the public, although, we can only imagine how stressful it would have been for her. She gave it her all and allowed herself to feel all the emotions she could during the process. However, at the end of the day, she couldn’t find her “forever person”. Being as strong-willed and self-aware as Lesina is a powerful message for all. Of course, our little hearts are breaking just a smidge that she broke up with her final two boys, Aaron and Logan, but we respect her decision full-heartedly.

Despite heavy criticism on televised dating shows, we think this one did wonders for presenting clear messages about societal norms; more than we’d like to admit. Men should be able to show their feelings without feeling ashamed, women should be able to live their lives however they want. Don’t look too deep into it and you’ll enjoy it just as much as we did.

OUR RATING: 4/5
